Green Thumbs Down to sellers who don't label plants

Call us spoiled but when we buy a plant we want to know what kind it is! How disappointing to see that indoor plants (houseplants, tropicals, foliage plants) at the "home" stores are not labeled at all. There, where even the smallest screw or bolt on the shelves has a name and a sticker, plants rate lower than the least of the manufactured items.

Say we buy a beauty of a jade (Crassula) like this -- usually as very small plant! -- with no I.D. other than "Foliage Plant" and you may be stuck giving cuttings to friends who admire it simply because you can't give them a variety name to shop for!

We send you to garden centers and greenhouses (here, Bogie Lake Greenhouses in White Lake, MI) for plants because we want you to succeed! If you don't know of a place to buy what you need locally, post on our Forum and get referrals from neighbor gardeners.

Variegated Moses in the cradle plant (Tradescantia spathacea variegata)

Variegated Moses-in-the-cradle (a.k.a. boat lily; Tradescantia spathacea variegata) resembles spider plant (below: Chlorophytum comosum) and both are low care indoor plants. So if you were shopping from a photo or a memory and had only nameless plants to choose from, you might end up with either one. Yet only the Tradescantia will provide purple highlights, and only in a bright location. Spider plant is much more reliable in dimmer situations.
